Introduction to ERP

ERP system should produce accurate, complete, timely and authorized information. In a computing environment, it can be accomplished using different controls in the ERP system and operating system in which this ERP operates. Controls can be categorized as General Controls and Application Controls.

General Controls

These are divided into Management Controls and Environment Controls.

  • Management Controls

These controls deal with organizations, policies, procedures, planning, etc.

  • Environment Controls

These controls are the build in Operating System controls.

Application Controls

These are the controls which are built in the ERP system and use to control the access of the system by the different level of users.

When organizations purchase an ERP, the objective is that the purchased ERP provides specific functions and benefits. These function and benefits need to be articulated to ensure that the ERP performs as desired. This process is called conducting a feasibility analysis which includes analysis of objectives, requirements, and system concepts etc. ERP systems originated to serve the information needs of manufacturing companies. Now these systems have grown up to serve other industries like chemical, healthcare, education, banks, consumer goods sector, etc. Due to this growth, ERPs are now available in micro computers from mini computers and with web interface from desktop interface. The main objective of having ERP may be integration between departments, processes and functions enabling reduction in data input, so less chances of errors, thereon.
