SAP SCM – An Overview

APO Overview - Supply Chain Planning

You run a forecast in APO Demand Planning (DP) based on aggregated historical data from an R/3 or Business Information Warehouse (BW) system. You use the “Administrator Workbench” in APO to upload this aggregated historical data from the R/3 or BW system. You can use Demand Planning in APO to generate planned independent requirements for make-to-stock planning (release of the forecast to APO Demand Planning).

Sales orders and planned independent requirements are the starting point for Supply Network Planning (SNP) and Production Planning and Detailed Scheduling (PP/DS) in APO. Existing storage location stock data is also included in planning. Sales orders are created in the R/3 system (in the Sales and Distribution module), but the availability check (also known as the available-to-promise (ATP) check) can be made in APO. In APO, the sales orders are then offset against the planned independent requirements depending on the APO “requirements strategy

Supply Network Planning (SNP) is a tool for non-detailed planning along the entire supply chain on a short to medium-term basis. You use it to generate stock transfers (for stock transfer planning) between the distribution centers and plants, to directly generate planned orders (for planning in-house production), and to generate purchase requisitions (for planning external procurement) in the production plant for the longer term.

In Production Planning and Detailed Scheduling (PP/DS) however, you generate planned orders and purchase requisitions directly in the production plant primarily over the short-term horizon.
